Psychiatric medication management refers to prescribing, monitoring and adjusting medications for mental health disorders. Medications can be used instead of or as a complement to psychotherapy.
Medications can relieve symptoms and relieve them quickly. They can stabilize or improve severe conditions that don’t respond to therapy alone, assisting you as you speak with your therapist and do the work that will result in your improved mental health. There is some evidence that combining psychotherapy and medications may be more effective than either treatment alone.
Medication management involves a collaborative approach between the psychiatrist and you and sometimes your other healthcare providers.
